Department of English Language & Literature, Hong Kong Shue Yan University

Shue Yan is the first private university in Hong Kong. The Department of English Language and Literature was established at the inception of what was then Shue Yan College in 1971. The department has placed an emphasis on interdisciplinarity over the past ten years and has been able to attract students who are both linguistically competent and culturally sensitive. In 2016-17, the department has 20 full-time faculty members and approximately 220 students. The department offers one undergraduate programme and one postgraduate programme. The four-year Honours Degree Programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts in English, was launched in September 2005. It contains four streams: English Literature, Linguistics, Translation and Cultural Studies. The ‘interdisciplinary’ elements of the programme perform the role of bridging between the 4 streams. The postgraduate programme, which leads to a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, was launched in 2013. This programme was designed in response to the network culture of the 21st century, where interconnectedness has become a new model for education, particularly in higher education systems.

School of General Education and Languages, Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong

The Technological and Higher Education Institute (THEi) was established in 2012 by the Vocational Training Council of Hong Kong to offer innovative accredited degree programmes with a vocational and professional orientation. The three faculties offer specialised programmes that are not only developed with significant industry input, but are also much needed by the public and private sectors. The institute produces work-ready graduates who possess expert knowledge and transferrable skills by adopting the “learn and do” approach which encourages students to apply specialised knowledge and skills to real-world issues. Aside from subject-related training, the importance of General Education (GE) is also stressed in the undergraduate curriculum at THEi. The School of General Education and Languages is dedicated to preparing students for lifelong learning and whole-person development. Its GE curriculum consists of language modules in Chinese and English as well as core and elective modules in Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences and other cross disciplinary areas, through which students will be able to enhance their language competencies, foster broadly-applicable skills, and develop their cultural and ethical values.
